Factors of increasing the Shanghai cooperation organization’s effectiveness in a context of threats and challenges of international security

Abstract

A number of multilateral cooperation projects in Central Asia relates to the development of interaction between China, Russia and other states of the region in the frame of Shanghai cooperation organization (SCO). In 2015, the organization increased the number of its members for the 1st time since 2001. Meanwhile, SCO’s inefficiency in different spheres brings its largest economic power – China – to concentrate on the development of New Silk Road and other projects. The author explores economic interaction, security cooperation and changing the number of the SCO’s members as a complex of problems that interrupts organization’s development. The author estimates the factor of emerging role of member states’ interaction facing new economic and security threats in the region and in the world.
